Mauritius Public Holidays 2027: The Official Full List of 16 Days and Planning Advice

Mauritius's list of public holidays for 2027 was approved by the Cabinet on 28 August 2026 and officially published by the Government Information Service (GIS) on 1 September, giving 16 days in total for the year. We have set out the official list in full below and flagged a few points that are easy to get wrong.

Two key reminders. ① The Assumption on 15 August 2027 is not on the official list — that day falls on a Sunday, and some third-party calendars still count it as a holiday, so please rely on the official announcement when citing it. ② Eid-Ul-Fitr (10 March) is an announced date and is subject to confirmation by the sighting of the moon, so the actual date may shift by a day either way.

2. Three features worth remembering

2.1 New Year is a “two-day” holiday

Mauritius's New Year holiday covers two days, 1 and 2 January, unlike most countries where it is a single day. In 2027 these two days fall on a Friday and a Saturday respectively, and together with Sunday 3 January they create a full long weekend at the start of the year.

2.2 The 2026 amendment adds a new “Sunday substitute holiday” rule

Under section 3(3) of the Public Holidays Act (as amended by the Economic and Financial Measures (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2026), where certain public holidays fall on a Sunday, a substitute holiday may be granted on the following day. In 2027 this is reflected in the fact that Ganesh Chaturthi falls on 5 September (a Sunday), and 6 September (Monday) is granted as a substitute public holiday.

2.3 There are no public holidays at all between May and August

From Labour Day on 1 May to Ganesh Chaturthi on 5 September there is no public holiday for more than four months. This is both the longest “holiday-free gap” of the year and the period when local government bodies, banks and professional services operate most continuously.

3. A few long-weekend windows suitable for planning trips

PeriodConsecutive days offComposition
1 January (Fri) – 3 January (Sun)3 daysTwo New Year days + Sunday
22 January (Fri) – 24 January (Sun)3 daysThaipoosam Cavadee + weekend
12 March (Fri) – 14 March (Sun)3 daysIndependence Day + weekend
4 September (Sat) – 6 September (Mon)3 daysWeekend + Ganesh Chaturthi + substitute holiday
29 October (Fri) – 2 November (Tue)5 daysDivali + weekend + All Saints Day + Arrival of Indentured Labourers
25 December (Sat) – 27 December (Mon)3 daysChristmas + weekend

Of these, the week from late October to early November deserves the most attention: Divali, the weekend, All Saints Day and the Arrival of Indentured Labourers run together, making it the longest continuous holiday period of 2027.

4. Practical effects on visits to Mauritius and on planning applications for residence

  • Government bodies and banks all shut down. During public holidays, the Economic Development Board (EDB), the revenue authority, banks, notary offices and most government counters are closed. If you need to submit documents, have documents notarised, attend an interview or open an account, be sure to avoid the dates above.
  • June to August is the best time for on-the-ground visits. There are no public holidays during this period, local institutions operate most continuously, and it is easiest to arrange viewings, meetings with developers and visits to government departments.
  • Leave margin at the end and the start of the year. Christmas on 25 December and the New Year holidays of 1–2 January the following year are adjacent, and combined with local staff's annual leave habits, practical efficiency from late December to early January drops noticeably.
  • The impact of religious holidays is not uniform. During holidays of the Hindu, Muslim and other communities, some local businesses (particularly community-based traders) may extend their own closure, but government counters follow the public holiday schedule.

5. Sources and notes

  • Issuing body: the Cabinet of Mauritius (decision of 28 August 2026), published by the Government Information Service (GIS) on 1 September 2026
  • Basis for substitute holidays: section 3(3) of the Public Holidays Act (as amended by the Economic and Financial Measures (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2026)

It should be noted that the exact dates of religious holidays may be adjusted slightly due to calendar conversion or the result of moon sighting, and different third-party calendars often differ (for example, Thaipoosam Cavadee is variously given as 20, 22 or 23 January, and Ougadi as either 7 or 8 April). The dates used in this article are in all cases based on the government's published list. If a trip is critical, we suggest confirming once more with us shortly before the date.
