FAQ
Mauritius Immigration FAQ
These answers are compiled from the official guidelines and website of the Economic Development Board (EDB) of Mauritius, supplemented by our own first-hand service experience. Where policies change, the latest EDB rules prevail.
How much investment does the Mauritius Investor Visa require?
Under the standard currently published on the Economic Development Board (EDB) website, an application for an Investor Visa (Occupation Permit – Investor) requires an investment of at least USD 100,000 (around RMB 720,000) in Mauritius, transferred from abroad into your own Mauritian account within 60 days of approval. From the third year after company registration, the company's annual turnover must reach MUR 5 million; for renewal at the 10-year mark, annual turnover must reach MUR 8 million from the fifth year of registration. The permit is valid for 10 years, and after holding it for 5 years you may apply for 20-year permanent residence (requiring annual turnover of MUR 15 million in the 5 years before application, or a cumulative MUR 75 million over 5 consecutive years). Once approved, a government licence fee of USD 1,000 is payable.
What are the requirements for the Mauritius Retirement Permit?
Applicants must be at least 50 years old. Under the current EDB standard, you need to evidence funds: either at least USD 24,000 per year in disposable funds shown in your Mauritian bank account, or a guaranteed monthly income of USD 2,000. This qualifies you for a Retirement Permit, valid for 10 years and renewable; after holding it for 5 years, with cumulative transfers of more than USD 200,000 over the 5 consecutive years before application, you may apply for 20-year permanent residence. A government licence fee of USD 1,000 is payable on approval. There is no global asset audit, and processing is fast — approval usually takes 2 to 4 weeks.
Can family members accompany me after immigrating to Mauritius?
Yes. For both the Investor Visa and the Retirement Permit, the main applicant may apply for Dependent Permits for a spouse, unmarried children under 22, and qualifying dependent parents. Dependants enjoy the same residence period as the main applicant. For accompanying parents, the main applicant must provide a letter of undertaking to bear their financial and social responsibilities, and the Passport and Immigration Office (PIO) decides each case individually.
Is the Mauritian tax regime friendly to immigrants?
Corporate income tax in Mauritius is 15%, personal income tax is progressive from 10% to 15%, and value added tax is 15%. According to EDB information, Mauritius levies no wealth tax and no inheritance tax, and dividends and (in general) capital gains are not taxed. Mauritius has also signed double taxation avoidance agreements with more than 40 countries and regions, including China, France, the UK and India.
Is Mauritius safe? Is it a good place for Chinese families to live?
Mauritius has stable public order and a well-functioning society, and is one of the few African countries that has long maintained political peace and democratic elections. The local community of Chinese descent numbers more than 30,000, and Chinese New Year is a public holiday. English and French are the official languages, and Chinese restaurants and Chinese supermarkets are readily available, making daily life convenient for Chinese residents.
What is the Investor Visa application process, and how long does it take?
The standard process has 6 steps: 1. Paid consultation and assessment (the consultation fee can be offset against the agency fee once you sign); 2. Travel to Mauritius for a site visit and complete company registration; 3. Prepare the application documents; 4. Submit the application to the EDB; 5. After approval, pay the government licence fee (USD 1,000), and attend the EDB verification of original documents and permit collection; 6. Use the permit to open your personal bank account and the company bank account, complete residence and fingerprint registration, and arrange settlement services (schools, renting, utilities and internet). The overall timeline is usually 2 to 4 months; the Retirement Permit is usually faster.
How long must I stay to keep the permit valid? Is there a minimum-residence requirement?
Mauritian residence permits have no strict minimum number of days of residence. Investor Visa holders must keep the investment project operating normally and meet the turnover requirements, while Retirement Permit holders must meet the annual transfer requirement. If you intend to apply for 20-year long-term residence, we recommend spending a reasonable amount of time in Mauritius each year to demonstrate genuine intent to reside.
I do not speak English or French — is daily life in Mauritius manageable?
English is the official language of Mauritius, with French and Creole in everyday use, and staff in the tourism and financial sectors generally speak English. The local Chinese community is well established, with Chinese restaurants, Chinese supermarkets and traditional Chinese medicine clinics, plus a Chinatown in the capital, Port Louis. We provide Chinese-language settlement assistance on the ground.
What are education and healthcare like in Mauritius?
Mauritius follows the British education system and public education is free. It has several international schools, including the North London Collegiate School and Clavis, with tuition at roughly one-third to one-half of international schools in China. The healthcare system follows British standards, public healthcare is free, private hospitals are well equipped, and advanced care can be arranged through South Africa, India and Dubai.
How much does it cost to apply for Mauritian immigration through you?
A consultation fee applies at the assessment stage, and once you sign it is fully offset against the agency fee. For the Investor Visa, our service fee is typically USD 15,000 to 40,000 on top of the official application fee (depending on the investment direction), covering company registration, document preparation, translation and notarisation, and on-the-ground settlement. The Retirement Permit service fee is relatively lower. Services are split into modules and charged step by step — you pay for the next step only after completing and approving the previous one, with no hidden charges.
Can you guarantee that my visa will be approved?
We do not promise that an application will be approved. All visa approval decisions rest with the competent Mauritian authorities, such as the Economic Development Board (EDB). Our value lies in this: drawing on 13 years of on-the-ground operating experience in Mauritius, we help clients get every step right — option matching, document quality and process momentum are all optimised, reducing risk and saving you time. In addition, if you need a GBL (Global Business Licence) company or an offshore company, since these involve licensed financial qualifications, we will match you with a more specialised licensed partner firm.
What basic documents are needed to apply for an investment or retirement residence permit?
According to the official EDB guidelines, these typically include: the passport personal details page; a colour passport photo of 3.5 × 4.5 cm taken within the last 6 months; a birth certificate (original in English or French, or a certified translation); proof of funds (a bank-issued funds certificate or bank statements); a detailed business plan for investment categories, prepared on the EDB template; and a certificate of good conduct / police clearance for retirement categories, covering the last 10 years and issued no more than 6 months previously. After the online application receives an "approval in principle", you must also submit company registration documents, the register of shareholders and directors, proof that funds have arrived, and a medical report, and bring all originals for on-site verification on the appointment day.
Is there a fee to apply to the EDB for the visa itself?
According to official EDB guidance, submitting an Investor Visa or Retirement Permit application online through the National Electronic Licensing System (NELS) is free, and the EDB charges no application processing fee; only approved applicants must pay the statutory licence fee to the Mauritian government as required. We advise caution with agencies that overcharge under the name of an "official application fee".
Who exactly counts as a "dependant" who may accompany me?
Under the official rules, dependants who may apply for a residence permit as accompanying family include: a spouse (including a heterosexual partner in a de facto relationship), parents, and unmarried children under 22 who are not engaged in gainful activity (including stepchildren and legally adopted children). A dependant's residence period may not exceed the main applicant's. For accompanying parents, the main applicant must provide a letter of undertaking to bear their financial and social responsibilities, and the Passport and Immigration Office (PIO) decides each case individually. Under the Immigration Act, the spouse of an Occupation Permit (OP) holder may also apply for an Occupation Permit independently in order to work in Mauritius.
What is the Premium Visa, and who is it for?
The Premium Visa is a long-stay visitor visa introduced by the Mauritian government. It is valid for more than 6 months and up to 1 year, and is renewable. It suits holidaymakers, retirees, and professionals who wish to work remotely from Mauritius with their families. Conditions: applicants may not enter the Mauritian local labour market; their main place of business and source of income must be outside Mauritius; and they must provide proof of a long-stay plan and adequate travel and health insurance. Apply online, with no application fee, and the e-visa is issued directly by email.
Can I switch to a Premium Visa after entering on a tourist visa?
Yes. You may submit a Premium Visa application online while staying in Mauritius. Note that a foreign visitor may stay for a cumulative period of no more than 180 days in a calendar year on a visa issued on arrival; if you plan to stay longer than 180 days, you should apply for a Premium Visa.
Can foreigners buy property in Mauritius?
Yes. Foreigners may buy residential property developed under the Integrated Resort Scheme (IRS), Real Estate Scheme (RES), Property Development Scheme (PDS) and Smart City Scheme (SCS), and may also buy apartments located on the second floor or above. Buying qualifying property (for example, above USD 375,000) can also support a direct application for a permanent residence permit. We can help you screen compliant projects and review the purchase documents.
What happens when the 10-year permit expires?
You may apply for renewal under the official conditions: according to EDB information, the company must meet the relevant operating requirements on renewal (renewal after 10 years requires annual turnover of MUR 8 million from the fifth year of registration); eligible holders may also apply directly for a 20-year Permanent Residence Permit (PRP). We begin assessing your business data about 12 months before expiry and plan the renewal or permanent-residence route, so there is no gap in your status.
After my child graduates in Mauritius, can they stay and work there?
Yes. Foreign students who complete a bachelor's degree or higher at an institution recognised by the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) may apply for a Young Professional Occupation Permit (YPOP) within 6 months of the results being published. It is valid for up to 3 years, covering fields including artificial intelligence, biotechnology, fintech, robotics, financial services and information technology; after 3 years, if the employer continues to employ them, they may apply for a standard Occupation Permit (Professional category).
